Public Health Problem:

For many urban dwelling residents, there is a lack of accessible fresh, organic and local food options. According to feedingamerica.org in 2018, the state of California, Alameda County community food bank measured a rate of 9.1% experiencing food insecurity, which roughly translates to over 150,000 residents.  This project seeks to gather data on current organic farms operating in the East Bay Area of Northern California and to determine how they serve the community and where gaps exist.

INTERNSHIP OBJECTIVE 1 (ASSESSMENT): By August 31, 2020, investigate and perform literature analysis on organic urban gardens impacting residents of East Bay Counties in Northern California.

Methods Discussion

Discuss the rationale of the methodology collection addressing assessment, planning implementation, and evaluation. If there are additional resources, skills, or guidance that you feel you will need to successfully employ to the anticipated methods, include them here.

Assessment will be based on literature analysis and geographical locations of organic urban gardens in both educational and residential communities. Planning includes scheduling garden sites and communicating with site managers/organizers, performing interviews during visits, and identifying community services. The focus is on organic urban garden accessibility to the community and determine where gaps exist. Implement best practices will be determined from survey analysis collection among the East Bay counties of Northern California. Evaluation includes analyzing the gap between urban gardens and community access by using a qualitative face to face interview. In the event shelter in order is current, phone interview or e-survey documenting response. Data collected will be analyzed with guidance from preceptor. Revise to match your new work plan above.

SECTION V

INTERNSHIP PROJECT PRODUCTS /DELIVERABLES

  1. Evaluation on gap analysis for each county
  1. Final needs assessment report w/ recommendations to improve the accessibility of organic urban gardens

SECTION VI

PUBLIC HEALTH COMPETENCIES

Each student will be addressing six competencies during their internship while completing their graduate-level project.  Competency 1 is a Foundational Competency already chosen for you. Competencies 2 through 5 will be chosen by you from the list of Foundational Competencies. For Competency 6, you must select one Public Health Practice Competency. Competencies 2 through 6 should be chosen based on the uniqueness of the graduate-level project.  For all six competencies, describe how each competency will be addressed and how the achievement of each competency will be measured while completing the graduate-level project.

Competency 1

Foundational Competency:

Describe the importance of cultural competence in communicating public health content.

Describe how Competency 1 will be addressed in the Internship

This competency will be achieved by the implementation objective, the needs assessment dissemination will focus on equitable access of urban gardens for communities of color who may be suffering from limited access to fresh local organic produce.

Describe how achievement of Competency 1 will be measured

Mapping the urban gardens and services according to zip codes.  These will be matched against health data associated with these residential areas.

Competency 2

Foundational Competency:

Assess population needs, assets and capacities that affect communities’ health

Describe how Competency 2 will be addressed in the Internship

Quantitative data will be interpreted based on community demographics and accessibility of organic urban gardens in the planning and evaluation objectives of this project.

Describe how achievement of Competency 2 will be measured

Intern will gather qualitative data and utilize literature analysis as part of the assessment and evaluation of the communities that organic urban gardens serve

Competency 3

Foundational Competency:

Propose strategies to identify stakeholders and build coalitions and partnerships for influencing public health outcomes.

Describe how Competency 3 will be addressed in the Internship

During the planning objective, the intern will address this competency by meeting and chatting through phone, video chat, and if permissible  in person discussion.

Describe how achievement of Competency 3 will be measured

The intern will meet with and garner input from community stakeholders on the development

Competency 4

Foundational Competency:

Interpret results of data analysis for public health research, policy or practice

Describe how Competency 4 will be addressed in the Internship

The implementation and evaluation stage will study and address the gap analysis on current organic urban gardens programs.

Describe how achievement of Competency 4 will be measured

The intern will conduct in person/phone interviews using questions developed in the planning stage. The qualitative data collected will achieve this competency

Competency 5

Foundational Competency:

Select communication strategies for different audiences and sectors

Describe how Competency 5 will be addressed in the Internship

Using demographic information of the county communication strategies will be addressed starting from the assessment stage.

Describe how achievement of Competency 5 will be measured

During the assessment component, the intern will identify community needs and accessibility of organic urban gardens.

Competency 6

Identify the student-selected Public Health Practice competency based on goals and individual project:

Explain the strategic planning processes and the relationship to budget formulation and sustainability planning

Describe how Competency 6 will be addressed in the Internship

Intern will utilize literature reviews in the assessment objective to gain knowledge and develop interviews to address connecting with the communities and identify challenges of organic urban gardens.

Describe how achievement of Competency 6 will be measured

The final needs assessment will result from the qualitative and quantitative data collected from both the quantitative and qualitative analysis to develop best practices of sustainable planning for urban gardens
