Professional Mission Statement

Growing up with problems in food affordability and accessibility, my mission in public health is to bring about change in teen and young adult development through healthy eating trends and reduce poor choices that can lead to obesity and type two diabetes. With my career as a public health professional, I hope to impact teens and young adults who are capable of making eating decisions to make better choices and reduce chronic morbid conditions.  In the past middle school education included courses like home economics which taught self-reliance and home cooking. Today many of the education programs that educate students on self-reliance have been eliminated, and concepts like food app and delivery services are the new normal. Convenience and accessibility of poor food choices and inability to cook has exacerbated chronic conditions, it is a time for a change.

Through the practicum work, professionalism meant learning to adapt to certain situation whether it is hostile or benign. The characteristics of a professional is to be patient, courteous, and communicative. Overall, my beliefs stayed the same throughout my internship with the exception of patience. I added patience because unlike other fields where monetary and goods are exchanged hands, patience in public health is needed. The goal is that it takes time to grow a garden and time to cultivate knowledge.
